Awaiting Armageddon [2011]

Awaiting Armageddon is my latest album and the 3rd heavy album I've recorded.

My decision to post it for Halloween wasn't because of its dark songs, I just happened to finish it last night so it became a nice coincidence.

When I play hard/heavy rock I always try to emulate Black Sabbath because the band to me is the school for everything dark and heavy in music and I mean their first 5 or 6 albums. I wrote that introduction so you can understand where the inspiration came that way you don't have to figure out why this doesn't sound like Metallica or Motley Crue or Cannibal Corpse. This album is more like Black Sabbath trying to play like Superchunk or something like that.

I finished the music for this album in May 2011 but as always I get stuck in the lyrics and singing department. I have another album ready but don't have any lyrics. There's another in the process with rhythm guitars but have not recorded anything else for it. I think I will finish one of them before the end of the year, maybe, let's see.

THE SNAKE
The snake was placed first because of the organ intro that way when you play the album you get a chance to put the popcorn in the microwave and still have time to come back to the heavy guitars session. The snake is some kind of monster which holds a woman in its lair and makes her its wife, you could say the lyrics are over the top.

YOUR DEMISE (SONG FOR PETER)
Yet another song related to the suicide of one of my best friends Peter Mercado.

ANOTHER FOLK SONG
Borrowed from "Up In Arms", this time it has a middle section. The song is about corporate domination, somehow we need to fight this monster.

THE TRIP
Was the first song I recorded for the album, the guitars have some kind of flanger effect which I dislike and you don't get to hear it anywhere else on the album.

RUNAWAY SPACECRAFT
This one could have been recorded for "Above The Clouds" because the lyrics reflect the same sci-fi theme I explored in that album. It has a psychedelic middle section.

ARMAGEDDON
Well, it all has to come to an end; this is the middle section from "Runaway Spacecraft" played backwards with a couple of keyboards.

Treat the kids with candy when they knock on your door, you can treat yourself with something else if you want to while listening to this album.

2011 - La Résistance Française

La Résistance Française is my latest psychedelic album. This time I recorded a concept album and the theme is The French Resistance of WWII.

I don't speak/read the french language but I thought it would be nice to have the titles in french as the songs are actually related to french history,

The cover was painted by my son when he was three years old. I digitally edited the colors and designed yet another 50-60's jazz cover.

The songs are psychedelic but not 60's psychedelia, they're more like a Spacemen 3 tribute.

L'Appel Du 18 Juin
This was the first I recorded and thought of putting it on another album I have in queue, then I decided to record a whole album in this style and the theme stuck. The lyrics are about the historic speech of June 18 1940 by Charles de Gaulle on BBC Radio.

Charles André Joseph Marie De Gaulle
This is the one I like the least of all.

La Résistance Française
This now short instrumental was actually longer and it was going to be the centerpiece but I decided to cut it because the main guitar was too similar to Sonic Youth's "Sunday".

Maquis
My favorite from the album just because it has some subtle changes even though is the same pattern for almost the entire song.

A long instrumental.

Croix De Lorraine
A short instrumental.

I have two more albums to post for what's left of this year, one of them is another Stoner Rock album which was recorded earlier than this one you've read about. I need to write lyrics for both of them but apart from that they're pretty much finished.

Our Soul, A Force [2011]

Our Soul, A Force is my latest album, actually a re-recorded one, the original was written and recorded in 2003.

When I started writing/recording the original it began as a concept album about religion/spirituality (a recurring theme from someone who's not a believer), the thing is that halfway through the album I was bored with the theme and wrote completely different songs including an outtake from "Destination: Saturn" and a version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" which included a "Real Cool Time" finale, the album had another song which I dismissed here because I re-recorded it for "Debris" and that was "Take Him By The Hand".

I played guitars, basses, drums and keyboards. The drums' sound is compressed so they are a little more subtle than on other albums.

The cover is from a picture I took of Bahia Honda Key, FL in August 2008.

1. QUESTIONS
This song is one of my favorites from the album, because it contains (keyboard) cello, soft guitars and later heavy guitars, I added a little something to the intro but apart from that the song is a copy of the original.

2. NO ANSWERS
Another favorite, an instrumental piece which retains only the bass line from the original, I think this is a really cool guitar instrumental.

3. SPIRITUAL MAN, PART 2
I was really proud of the original but I found that the sound was poor as well as the drums, now I like it so much more.

4. KASHIMBO
I wanted to have a little instrumental in between each of the songs and I did most of them with an eastern feel. I played the guitars and bass with a percussion loop on the original, now for this one I played drums and sounds better.

5. OUR SOUL, A FORCE
The original was an eight minute song which I edited because of poor playing and ended with a 1:48 second little piece, for this version I didn't bothered with the eight minutes version and went straight for the less than 2 minutes version.

6. TOKKON
Another little eastern instrumental.

7. QUESTIONS (REPRISE)
The faster version of Questions. It was my son's favorite song when he was a toddler, he even tried to sing it.

8. SIHAYA
Another eastern instrumental. It is actually the original song mixed with new drums and some additional bass. You can notice the Les Paul guitar I used to record with, that guitar had an incredible presence.

9. ENTER THE WIZARD
An instrumental, this time with organs.

10. WE WERE FRIENDS
Here is were the album goes into another direction lyrically. The origins of the music for this song come from watching the The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" movie in the late 90's and me grabbing a guitar trying to emulate their sound from that concert which to me is incredible to this day. My song changed later and became the original and now it has changed some more it even sounds a little funky.

11. MY STAR
A rock n' roll song with lyrics written for a good friend, this song was written in 1997 for one of my first cassette albums so this one is the third version I've recorded.

12. AGHUA
Another eastern instrumental. I did the same for this one as SIHAYA, were I played drums and bass and then mixed them with the original song.

13. NOT ALIVE
Straight rock music, not much to say about it.

14. DEAD
Originally DEAD was the coda for NOT ALIVE, I've included piano for this version.

15. PSALM 2000
Another eastern instrumental.

16. SATURN (FLASHBACK)
It was an outtake written and recorded for "Destination: Saturn", for the original version of "Our Soul, A Force" I mixed drums with it. Now I re-recorded the whole song and the sound is so much better.

17. EVIL EYES
This piece was recorded in 1997, the original was a 7:30 minutes wah fest.
For the original version of "Our Soul, A Force" I mixed drums to it, in fact it was the first time I used computer drums.
I lost the original 7:30 minutes version years ago, and only retain a shorter 2:20 minutes version which I had included on one of those cassette albums I mentioned before.
So I recorded bass and drums and mixed them with the 2:20 minutes version.

Up In Arms [2011]

Up In Arms is my latest Punk Rock EP.

There's not much to say except that it's short (less than five minutes) and that the lyrics are a little punkish.

1. MONEY DESTROYED MANKIND
That's been my view since I was six years old.

2. SUICIDE OR MURDER?
This one is my least favorite song from the ep. What society does to weak minded people.

3. UP IN ARMS
What some people (including me) would like.

4. ANOTHER FOLK SONG
The sister of Up In Arms, totally related to the other.

5. SCAVENGERS AND BUMS
I know some people who think they and their friends are the only ones who deserve to live on earth.

6. CONGRESSMAN COKE
This song was written last night right after the evening news when they exposed the drug test of one our congressmen who tested positive for cocaine. "What a wonderful world..."

7. PAY ME NOW AND THANK ME LATER
This is some kind of criticism to the artists who charge for the music they create. I think is fair to charge for a performance but not for an album, that's my opinion so don't hate me for it.

I hope there's an audience for this album. If you judge by the comments I think there isbecause the last time I received one was when I posted the "Sadness 'Round The Bend" ep.

Above The Clouds [2011]

"Above The Clouds" is my latest album, the music was recorded in December 2010 and the vocals in January 2011.

This one is mostly acoustic although the title track and it's sister "Clouds" are mostly keyboard space rock.

Right now this one is my favorite album so far right up there with "The Eyelid Of God..." and "Spectrum".

My favorite tracks are "Clouds", "Yellow Button" and "Golden Wrench".

I played real drums again (I think I'm getting better at it).

The cover is from a photograph I took while on vacation in Barbados.

THE SONGS:

1. SAUCERS AND DAUGHTERS
This is a mini suite that has the feel of Wooden Flower Suite.

2. GOLDEN WRENCH
This is another cousin of "I'm Still Alive" this time the lyrics are very different so this is not part 3 of that song. One of my favorites from the album.

3. CLOUDS
This is space rock with pop sensibility if that can be possible. My favorite track from the album.

4. FEAR
This is piano piece, well it really is a piano loop, something I couldn't fully develop while playing the keyboard but I liked it enough to include it in the album.

5. YELLOW BUTTON
This is an acoustic piece with keyboard cello, I'm proud of this track and is one of my favorites from all my songs.

6. YOUR FOOL
This is a sister of "Prisoner Of Yourself" from "The Eyelid Of God". It has a new wave/punk middle section. It's the only without keyboards or acoustic guitars. Some sort of funky guitars decorate the main theme.

7. ABOVE THE CLOUDS
The title track is one of the wackiest songs I've recorded. It has four parts and the keyboards fill this song to almost unbearable craziness. I like it but I think more spaced out people than me will appreciate it more than I do.

Lizard [2010]

Lizard is my latest album. An instrumental one. It contains keyboards, guitars, basses, computer drums on two tracks and real drums on the rest.

The front cover is from a picture of an iguana I took in St. Thomas and the back cover is from a picture I took in the Bahamas. I though people were going to find it horrible but I found out that people seem to like it.

1. ORANGE
This track was originally recorded when I started the "Road To The Soul" Sessions and I put it aside for later to include it on one of those experimental instrumental albums like "Hosted" and "Push Her". Well, I think Lizard is one of those albums.

2. DESERT
Desert is actually "Auto-Circles" from "And Now... Something Completely Similar". The bass is from that song, the drums are new (and real). It sounds like a dub song.

3. SAND
This is a new recording from last week and contains keyboards, bass and computer percussion.

4. LIZARD
My favorite track from the album is an 18 minutes epic. It contains keyboards, bass and real drums.

And Now... Something Completely Similar [2010]

This album was originally written in 2004 and the original version includes a cover of "T.N.T." from AC/DC this time I decided to leave it behind.

This re-recorded version marks the first time that I play real drums and it really is an improvement maybe not on the sound but the playing flows better on this one.

I play a lot of keyboards and there are some surprizes including a New Wave/New Romantic song and four (yes four) reggae songs.

J.J.
Dedicated to Janis Joplin, although I don't listen to her a lot I was impressed as a teenager when I first watched the Monterey Pop Film, I had heard Big brother & The Holding Co. before but you know the feeling when you go to a concert and you connect with the artist but if you listen to a recording of the same concert you'll love it but surely it won't be transcendental, anyway i think she was a victim of her own generation.

Black Dust
It has some skanking guitars but it's not supposed to be ska or reggae, I like it a lot.

Double tragic Blood
It was an instrumental on the original version so I wrote some lyrics a couple of weeks ago.
It has a bass line which I learned more than ten years ago. What's double tragic blood?, well I don't know, maybe diabetes???

Lonely
This one was originally recorded on a cheaper Casio keyboard than the one I've used before. This version includes farfisa and synth and now sounds the way I wanted it to sound, just like an early 80's synth pop/New Wave/New Romantic song, it really is a tribute to that sound because I was raised on it, although it turned into shit in 1984 I still listen to a lot of those bands including Depeche Mode, OMD, Devo, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.......................................................................

Lost new World In The Year Of Our Victory
An instrumental sort of loop with increasing noises and a short guitar solo at the end of it.

No Other Level
This one is kind of a cousin of the "Connect The Polka Dots" album because it sounds like some of the songs in it. I'm satisfied with this version especially the drums.

Buloodu
This is another instrumental song that got the lyrics' treatment a couple of weeks ago and I never thought I was going to pull it off, I'm more than satisfied with this one, it's way better than the original.

He Chose No Path For You / Roads To Freedom / Your Choice / Choice Dub
The first reggae song of four in a row. It was supposed to be some sort of "God Suite". All except the instrumental dub are about what I believe is God.

Auto-Circles
This is an acoustic guitar piece I learned more than 15 years ago. I was going to write some lyrics but decided to leave it as it is, I think it has its own personality without words interfering. I like it a lot.

The Battle Of The Ants vs. The Sun
It has incredibly ridiculous lyrics but the music I like a lot and I'm also satisfied with the outcome of this version, because although the original was an ambitious one it lacked cohesion and the playing was so sloppy that you could almost compare it to The Shaggs.

Glide Divine You Satisfying Spectrum
One of my favorite songs from this album. It is a complete tribute to Spectrum (Sonic Boom's band). The Main theme is based on the song "How You Satisfy Me". I remember watching the video for that song on early 1993 and thinking: "These guys are insane, this is the coolest thing that's ever been aired on TV". If you've never heard of them or the song you're missing on something sweet, I mean the song is like the evil twin of "96 Tears".

Road To The Soul [2010]

My latest psychedelic rock album.

The cover picture is of one of the many bridges of the Florida keys and was taken in 2008 by me while on vacation.

I wrote, played and sung all the songs and most of them are psych rock except one or two.

1. ROAD TO THE SOUL
Is the title track and contains a scorching fuzz guitar solo with wah rhythm guitars, it also has some B3 organ. I think this is the noisiest song of the album so if you like softer songs the album is just beginning so don't be put off by this one.

2. YOU AND YOUR PARTNER IN CRIME
This is one of my favorites and has two parts, the first one is 6+ minutes long, they're both related and have some congas and bongos in it. I really like the guitar solos of both parts because they're very different from I usually play which are blues based solos, the solos in this song are somewhat melodic.

3. I DIDN'T SLEEP LAST NIGHT
This is my favorite song of the album and in true irony is not psychedelic at all but again the solo is melodic and not based on the blues.

4. IMMORAL PEACE
A short suite, the parts where I sing I believe are very cool, and I like the lyrics.

5. YOUR COUSIN
The track is a short keyboard part that I wanted to extend but couldn't finish.

6. THE PRINCE AND THE PALACE
This is a nice piece of 1968 psychedelia. The chord pattern of the beginning is almost the same as the beginning of the song "Spectrum" but somewhow sound very different.

7. THE SHERIFF'S VENGEANCE (A WESTERN)
The lyrics are a tribute to final scenes of spaghetti westerns. The instrumental second part of the song is a heavy bass keyboard saturated feast, i like it a lot.

8. KING DROLIGHT'S CASTLE
The guitar part of the song was an outtake from the album "Spectrum" so this means this is the earliest track from the album. The guitars are distorted and has a dissonant guitar and laser gun keyboards middle section. The lyrics are more related to "The Black Lagoon".

9. (NEARLY DEAD BUT...) I'M STILL ALIVE, PART 2
This song is very similar to "I'm Still Alive" from "Spectrum" so I decided to call it Part 2.

10. HIDDEN GLORY OF TIME
It was the last one recorded but I was going to place it at the beginning of the album but at the last minute decided to place it at the end and I think it was a good choice.

Spectrum [2010]

Spectrum is my latest album and was written and recorded between October 2009 and February 2010, The music was recorded entirely in October 2009 but the lyrics were written mostly in between January and February.

I think this is my most accomplished album to date and that doesn't mean my favorite. Accomplished because it contains most of the genres I play with a great flow. Not my favorite because I'm in love with "The Eyelild Of God.." and I will have to work hard to out perform that one which is a prog-indie album very different from this one. I think "Spectrum" finishes what I started with "Slavery Ends With Art" which covers a lot of ground.

I'm very proud because I played lots of keyboards and for the first time I think I played it well and doesn't sound half as bad as my early experiments.

1. THE DOOR TO DELIGHTS
A tribute to 1967-68 psych with perfect science fiction lyrics and a great intro to this fine album.

2. LOST
My favorite from the album has very little guitars (rare in my songs) and lots of keyboards, the reverb rhodes is great as well as a synth solo inspired by the Moog 70's. It's a slow paced mellow trippy song.

3. REARVIEW MIRROR
Has some classic church organ and a nice guitar solo, sort of classic R&B from the late 60's done my way.

4. MY BEST FRIEND (SONG FOR PETER)
The third song I've written about my friend Peter Mercado who committed suicide while we were in high school. I regret that I kind of drifted from his side, he was an honest and sincere person. I think he would have enjoyed this album and I dedicate it to him.
It starts as a Motown tune and ends with a softer piano based coda.

5. SPECTRUM [INCLUDING "LOST (REPRISE)"]
A suite and includes some soft parts, a driving guitar solo and an instrumental reprise of "Lost" with an organ wah solo.

6. REMAINS OF ANCIENT TROY
This one is a neo-psych-indie tune with strange lyrics.

7. LITTLE BOY SURVIVOR [INCLUDING "FAT MAN RADIATION"]
The longest song of the album about a survivor of the Hiroshima Bomb and at the end includes a track called "Fat Man Radiation" from the Nagasaki Bomb.
Am I crazy?, I could be but somebody should diagnose it first.

8. I'M STILL ALIVE
No this one is not about the same survivor I think this one's crazier than the one mentioned before, you figure it out. Unplugged sound with an electric solo.

9. INFINITE SADNESS [INSTRUMENTAL]
A piano, bass and drums instrumental.

10. I'LL SET YOU FREE
An indie song with an interesting middle section.

11. SEVEN DAYS
This is a plain rock song with a better middle section than the one on "I'll Set You Free".

Sadness 'Round The Bend (EP) [2009]

This is my latest release and this time is a Punk Rock EP containing 5 songs each one less than a minute long, so this is a very short EP.

My Punk Rock influences are in this order: DEAD KENNEDYS, MINOR THREAT and GANG OF FOUR (not punk but I will include them here because people keep including THE STOOGES in the genre so why can't I do the same with GOF).

Anyway I kept it short because I get tired of Punk Rock easily.

Electric Laser Church Of Agnostic Gnomes [2009]

Yet another album from 2009 (my 5th this year), this time a psychedelic concept album about religion and some people who go to church looking for who knows what and never find it.

I'm not saying all people who go to church are not sure why they go but some aren't and that's what this is about.

The first song, Sunday Morning, is a mellow track with an acoustic guitar basic track and a lot of keyboards which are hardly noticeable.

The second, Another Ceremony, the center, longer piece and my favorite from the album, it contains many sections and for me they all are fabulous and exciting, and although is 17 minutes long it feels like is 10 minutes shorter because it never gets tiresome.

The third and final song, Heaven (At Home) is an instrumental track done with just two keyboard tracks (no guitars, drums or bass), it's very relaxing and have an avant-garde feel.

If you can believe it, the artwork is from a Disney on Ice show picture that my wife took when she and my son went to see it on the summer of 2008.

Proceed At Your Own Risk! [2009]

My latest album, another funk rock exploration, this time more professional and in some cases more experimental.

It contains pure funk, disco, reggae all done with a rock player mind and of course as always my own style familiar to those who have already ventured into this blog.

The artwork has images of the Trafalgar Falls' path on the island of Dominica which is an irony because the type of music on the album is mostly associated with urban life.

There's a long song with an avant middle section in it, a song done in two versions the second version has more of a hard sound and so I called it the Bullet Version, there's a reggae song about a very special/dangerous plant and a bad experience with it and then there's the title piece which is really ambient noise.

The Eyelid Of God... [2009]

This album is now my favorite one of all I've recorded. It reminds me a lot of those early 70's albums by Gravy Train, Krokodil, Raw Material, etc. which is the music I listen to the most, but it has that indie rock quality of the 90's.

The title of the album was stolen from a line of "Waltz Of The New Moon" by The Incredible String Band.

I tried not to overdo the artwork and do it minimal so it can create some contrast with the ever changing movements of the songs.

The 1st song is my favorite because of the instrumental 3rd part of it which is noisy and disjointed but somehow melodic.

There's some $1 wood flute on the 2nd song; one of the shortest, it has more movements than most of the rest of the album but the flow is almost seamless.

The 3rd song has some funk guitar, evolves into an eastern little piece and then returns to the main theme at the end.

The words of the 4th song are about writer's block, which is always present in me because I'm not a natural writer or singer.

The 5th song is an instrumental with some strange noises all created with an electric and bass guitar.

The last song was the first I recorded from the album and the inspiration for the rest of them.

This album is full of suites and mood changes like some of the songs recorded by Paul McCartney in the early 70's like "Band On The Run" and "Uncle Albert" but the difference is that this one is mostly hard/progressive rock.

Memories Lost Under Grey Hair [2009]

I don't know how to rate this album yet, I kind of have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure I will learn to love it later on.

The artwork is the second in a series of tributes to the jazz albums covers from the 50's.

I'll try to explain what I think of the songs:

THE STALKER. This one is my favorite from this album, I like the wah guitar solo and the way it gets faster towards the end.

MEMORIES L.U.G.H. A 70's hard rock funky intro. The album's named after this song because there are a couple of songs related to nostalgia in it.

BURNING FEET. This track was first recorded in 1997 and like all of my recordings from that era the fuzz pedal was always on, now on this one I stripped the whole thing. Don't ask what the lyrics mean.

NOSTALGIA. An instrumental.

TEENAGE LOVE. Another bossa nova track. This is my second favorite track from the album and I really love the wah guitar solo.

PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF. This is a trippy track with a good fuzzy solo in the middle of it.

NOTHING TO GAIN. The original title of this song was "Third World Espionage" I decided to keep it simple and not confuse the listener who tries to find any meaning in it. I like it but is not my favorite.

ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. I recorded the basic track (Casio Keyboard) after listening to Bill Fay's "I Hear You Calling" from the album Time Of The Last Persecution which is one of my favorite albums from the 70's.

The Black Lagoon [2009]

My second heavy rock album, an appropriate one to open this dark 2009, and I say dark because of the global economy as well as the three ongoing wars in the middle east

The truth is that I was listening to Sabbath's "Master Of Reality" a lot in December and it shows.

The themes of the songs are very odd and I'm not used to write these type of songs but I think they fit the overall feeling of the album.

The music, well, all six songs are almost equal to each other except "Ritual" which starts in the same vein as her sisters but it gets more similar to my latest extended experiments (especially when clocking at almost 18 minutes long).

The artwork is a cropped picture of St. Kitts on Good Friday 2008, while I was on a cruise ship with my wife and son.

Anyway this album is dedicated to my friend "The Ohio Carp" who really digs this type of music.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!

This is a special album for me and not at all in a good way, the original was my fourth; it contains nine songs that actually are about a not so good relationship I had with a girlfriend, the lyrics of those were written in 1998-99 but the original album was recorded in 2002-03.

It's also very special because of this new version which sounds really good I must say, so much cleaner than the original.

THE SONGS: - Miniature Brain
This one is actually about a Social "Tea" meeting with friends and the mentioned girlfriend, it was a strange night, the things you see, feel and hear when you're under the shitty tea, well that was another time, long gone.

- Cow Shit - Rainbows - Melted Walls -
Blues, Part 4 [Including Drums For Electricity]
These four songs are what I thought it would be the Social Tea Suite but I couldn't write any lyrics for it and then opted to separate the songs. The first two have an eastern feel.

- When You're Down
I now realize that one of this song's guitar parts is almost identical to Huxton Creepers' song "Slow Attack". All I can say is that it wasn't intentional. I love this one and the lyrics are about the state I was in while in the above mentioned relationship.

- Tunnel/The Bottom
Filler, filler, filler. One is an eastern guitar part (edited backwards) and the other a Dub Reggae track.

- Bottom Of The Sea
This one was actually written in 1996, it's not about any girlfriend and you could say the lyrics are similar to Yellow Submarine or Octopus's Garden, sort of like a children song. The music has a Caribbean feel.

- Link, Space
More filler on the reggae and Sci-Fi side.

- Put It Down (The Knife)
This one was inspired by Frank Zappa's "Nine Types Of Industrial Pollution", actually the recording technique used to speed up the guitar solo was what inspired me to do it.

The rest are pretty standard rock songs, except River Of Madness which is like a sister of those Social Tea Suite songs in that incorporates the eastern/blues part of those.

Slavery Ends With Art (2008)

This is my latest album and I'm pretty sure the last one for 2008.

I designed the artwork to be some sort of tribute to the 50's early 60's artwork mostly done for jazz albums.

I believe this album is the best of the four I recorded in 2008, it's almost a sampler of the three preceding albums.

- Like a Disease
It was recorded originally for an old album called SOCIAL TEA (which I will re-record later). It was an instrumental and I added lyrics for this new album.

- Winter Time
A Bossanova tune. I recorded a similar but electric song for "UNFINISHED REPORT..." and discarded. This time I chose to exchange the electric guitar for an acoustic and write new lyrics more fitting to the song.

- Neurogenesis (First Thoughts)
This song was born after an invitation/challenge from Mike-Floyd author of the Homemade Lo-Fi Psych blog to record a song about Embryo Thoughts. I'm proud of the thing.

- Geometric Lapses of Unconscious Landscapes / Constant Shadows
These are some of those avant-garde songs I seem to squeeze into most of my albums and you should know that I will keep doing these songs for as long as I play the guitar, I just love them.

- Sold To The Polls
A piano piece from 2005, recorded on the same sessions that produced BLUE BRAIN FLU's Mysery. I added bass, drums, lyrics and voice for this album.

- Screwed
One of my favorite songs from this album, it's very similar to some of the tracks from DESTINATION: SATURN.

- Lost Your Bubbles In a Half Empy Glass Of Champagne
This one is actually a deleted part of FILTH's Zanzibar.

- Walk The Land
A percussion saturated track with an eastern solo.

- Dreams Never End / Regarding Your Expectations
Mixed feelings about this one, don't know what to say...
I like them but if I had to do a "best of" collection I wouldn't use them.

- Making Caramel Under The Bridge

My latest album, a Funk Rock album.

It contains no covers, but at the same time it has more solos than a Grateful Dead concert.

The basic tracks were recorded in march 2008 but I wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocals last week (and it shows!!!).

This one is like "Connect The Polka Dots" in that it's not a psychedelic album at all but it's more mature than the one mentioned.

Connect The Polka Dots (2008)

This is my latest album recorded between january and september 2008, actually the music was finished in may when I posted the "Blue Brain Flu" album but I've been so lazy that I just couldn't write or sing songs (procrastination has been in full effect this year).

The album contains 5 cover songs:

1. Ni Chicha Ni Limona
This song was written and recorded by the martyr Víctor Jara, a Chilean songwriter whose own government killed him along with thousands in the Chile Stadium. You can find out more about this great latin american here: Victor_Jara

3. 36-24-36
It was written by Violent Femmes' singer/guitarrist Gordon Gano, one of my favorite bands of the 80's, the Violent Femmes played songs that reflected introspective youth, although this song doesn't reflect that, I think it fits this album.

7. Given the Dog A Bone
Ac/Dc !!!!!!.... I just can imagine you listening to my version and thinking: Is this guy real?, is this a joke?, well it's no joke I like them I can't sing like Brian Johnson or Bon Scott but still think their early albums especially with Bon Scott are influential as anything from the 70's.

9. Wanted Man (Outlaw Man)
Written by David Blue, this song is one of my favorite songs played by the Eagles, I've only heard their version so mine it's inspired by theirs.

12. Sam Stone
This one is a really great song and very fitting in these times of war. It was written and recorded by John Prine, a country songwriter whose debut album is a masterpiece. This song inspired me to write The Good War which was "coincidentially" placed right after Sam Stone on this album.

Most of the rest of the album was inspired by The Rolling Stones' kind of old style rock 'n roll mixed with my own style.

I have a couple of albums in the can, one that only needs lyrics and another in the process of recording the basic tracks; I only wish I don't get so lazy as I have been most of this year.

From the unreleased, unfinished album "Paens & Odes". THE ANCIENTS is one of Michael Dust Devil's (DUSTdevils, ATLANTIC DRONE...) band projects. Sadly the singer Patrick Hurst just recently took his life. The song was recorded about 3 months ago on Michael's Pro-Tools rig, just before he returned from Bradford, Yorkshire, to live in the USA again. Right at the moment Michael is busy recording a new lp with JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER and also just finished recording the 2nd lp with ATLANTIC DRONE (Hugh Hopper from SOFT MACHINE is now in the band!).

02. STOLLE & MEMBER - Wellen (mixed & edited) (9:55) A track from their latest workshop, freshly mixed and edited. Stolle & Member are two guys from Karlsruhe and Frankfurt a. M., Germany, specialised in creating free improvised music in the best 70's krautrock tradition. From time to time they play as a rock trio called THE WHOLE, often joined by krautrock legend DAMO SUZUKI (ex THE CAN).

03. LEONEL GARCIA - Neurogenesis (First Thoughts) (4:20) The song was directly inspired by the theme of this sampler. The lyrics were written from the point of view of an embryo asking his mother about his/her future, and not optimistically about his dad. Leonel records alone with a PC, guitars, Casio keyboard and mic. He is not confined to record psych or trippy music (although that's his main influence), he records whatever mood he is into.

04. T.H.U.M.B. - Jorgen's Shit Song (3:48) Unreleased track from the latest recording session. The Italian stoner rock band (with space and psych elements) consisting of Bokal (bass, vocals, synth), The Zmudah (guitar and vocals), Liz (drums) released two cds up until now. They played many gigs in Italy some years ago, but now seem to be no longer together, there may a reunion though in the near future.

05. SZBUTÄ SORÖH - Womb Of My Mind (6:23) SZBUTÄ SORÖH is a Brazilian one-man experimental/noise music project. Samuel Macedo, the man behind the name, uses a variety of different instruments and many different sources for his music, ranging from bamboo flutes,acoustic and electric guitars to field recordings, that afterwards are manipulated through computer processings. This for sure isn't easy listening!

CATASTO ELETTRICO is an improvisational Italian band, that retired from playing live to concentrate on recording improvised sessions very much in a jazzy progressive style (with some indi influences). For this compilation CATASTO ELETTRICO were digging deep in their vaults and finally found this track, which they edited years ago for a dead early album project. 20. RADAGAST PROJECT - Re:birth (edit) (10.00) Another psychedelic Gem from RADAGAST PROJECT, recorded 15/08/08 on a fostex 8 track analogue tape machine. The voices were recorded with an analogue answering machine, edited with Magix Cleaning Lab and transferred to tape. RADAGAST PROJECT is the psychedelic folk project of former PEACE'N'STUFF bass & flute player Christof Köhler (aka Koehler, aka CK – listen to tr. 8 on the first HLFP sampler!). Here he dives deep into inner space to explore the embryonic experience... On a background of didgeridoo and sitar drone there’s a stereo track of distorted electric guitar treated with a violin bow and occasional mellow flute. A monotonous heartbeat bass and gong explosion towards the end create an astounding early Floyd mood. All instruments played by CK. This version here was slightly speeded up and had to be edited to meet Mike’s 10 minute restrictions. The original, unedited version is 12.20 min long. More web-only released stuff can be found on

THE PREMISE/CONCEPT OF HLFP 02:

1. Each song had to be unreleased until the given date to feature EXCLUSIVE material, and it had to fit in somehow to the given THEME.

2. Each artist could only contribute ONE track.

3. Song length: 10 MINUTES or less.

4. SOUND QUALITY wasn't that important (remember the blog's name!), but it had to be LISTENABLE.

5. NO COVER SONGS were allowed. The contributor had to be the copyright holder.

6. DEADLINE was Fr. 15th, August 2008 (more or less...)

ASSEMBLING THIS COLLECTION: Some adjustments were done, when it seemed necessary: first of all concerning the different recording levels; also some noise and recording clicks were removed/faded in or out at the beginning and the end of one or two songs; one mono track had to be shortened and was doubletracked and slightly remixed on that occasion to give it a little bit more volume (hope you don't mind, guys!). Otherwise all tracks were left untouched.

A WORD ABOUT THE RUNNING ORDER:
The songs on HLFP 02 are placed exactly in the running order as they were sent to me. First track came first... (Thanks, Michael!), nevertheless I find this sampler suprisingly fluent and coherent – though a whole lot of different styles are to be heard.

THE SELECTION:
Almost all offered tracks were chosen in the end. Only one song had to be rejected for the fact, that it already had been released (even on this blog!) and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with the given theme/concept! Sorry, guys!

Blue Brain Flu (2008)

My latest album, recorded between February and May.
As always I play every instrument of the album but my wife helped me with backing vocals on a Piero's Vengo cover [Piero was an Italian born Argentinian protest singer songwriter very popular in the 60's and 70's in all of Latin America].

Here I finally finished the Dark Future Suite I tried to record on A Vision In A Dream, I couldn't do it on that other album because of the poor acoustic recording techniques I had in those days. Most of the lyrics were written in 1992, this is one my earliest songs.

I also recorded the titled track Blue Brain Flu as a sort of suite but this time completely electric and a little more instrumental and avant-garde than the Dark Future Suite.

The instrumental Misery was recorded on 2005 before I began the sessions for the Roots album, I added the drums two weeks ago, the song is just plain piano [yes, the same Casio keyboard I always use but don't know how to play], no guitars or bass.

Red, Red Communist, Deputy Of Light, Magazine Smiles and The Tape Was Paused were recorded for another album, an album which I now discarded and will finish later with other songs replacing these ones.

I'm proud of it and I'm already spending a lot of time listening to it so enjoy! Leonel Garcia

Push-Her (2006)

This album was recorded in 2006 right before I recorded "A Vision In A Dream".

It was the first of two sort of dance/electronic albums I recorded but different from the other one (Hosted Critical Dynamic Resources) on this one I played electric guitar and bass on the whole album and the guitar also took the lead.

I'm very proud of it although I don't listen to it a lot because I'm not much into this kind of music.

There's lots of wah guitar in it and has a kind of a funk groove.

Roots (2005)

This album was written and recorded in 2005. It was the first album I posted on the first version of this blog before I pulled the plug.

It was also the first of my albums that I liked the sound, it was also the first recorded with the Shure Microphone I record my albums today. I played the Les Paul guitar, Goldwave and the Propellerhead Reason 3.0 software I wrote about before. One thing I first used that time and I haven't use after this album is Guitar Tracks, a software I don't recommend because of its limited features.

The album contains 4 covers:

-Good Morning Little Schoolgirl a song by Sonny Boy Williamson but the inspiration was from the Grateful Dead's version of it.

-I Saw The Light by Todd Rundgren, done here with out of tune organ and guitars (not good).

-None A Jah Jah Children No Cry by Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus, I really love this song, both the original and my different version.

-Sugaree by Jerry Garcia, I always liked this song and I recorded a better version than the one on this CD in 2001 but I lost it. The one on this CD is not that good and I think I could have done better.

My favorite songs from the album are:

Destination: Saturn [Demo] (1997)

Here it is as promised the DESTINATION: SATURN demos/original album, this was the 3rd album I wrote and recorded, it was all done in 1997.

When I wrote this thing I was heavily into progressive rock and psychedelia, and I wanted to write a concept album; I didn't know what to do and while I was reading a saturn article about astrology I became interested in the planet and researched a little more and that help me write my concept album, the first half of the album has a flow but then I became lazy with the writing and concentrated on long instrumentals (boring!!!).

As I wrote on the very first post of this blog this was recorded with a karaoke tape machine, a couple of guitar pedals one of them a digital delay/sampler which let me sample the drums from various sources including a Pixies song, and a Frank Zappa song; I also used the same Casio keyboard I use today (which I still don't know how to play well) and a Les Paul guitar.

The sound is heavy on fuzz distortion, wah and hiss. I'm not that proud of it and that's why I re-recorded it in 2007.

Some songs were instrumentals and on the new version I wrote lyrics for them, and most of the songs are very different from the new version, they are mostly stretched with longer solos and pretty monotonous I must say.

I guess I'm posting it because I want you to hear the differences.

Lost In The Morning Dew [Alternate Versions] (2007)

These are alternate versions of some of the songs from the album LOST IN THE MORNING DEW.

Recorded early this year and later re-recorded for the final album, except for "2. Rats On Your Floor" which was re-recorded when doing the final touches of the album and then discarded because I liked the original version better which is the number 3 in this file, for the final version I just added another guitar and louder drums.

You will notice that most of these songs are faster than those in the album, that's the reason I had to record them again, I just thought the were rushed, there are alternate lyrics also on "Old And Grey".

Unfinished Report Of Last Year's Report (2007)

This album was recorded between 2006 and 2007 and it was the first recorded with my newly and cheaply acquired Washburn Guitar and the first of seven recorded on 2007.

I think this is one of my best albums but the guitar and bass sound is not the best so I don't listen to it very often.

The guitar parts are very soft and subtle on most of the songs and I am conscious of a Krautrock influence on some of the songs especially on the title track and "You've Grown".

Friends, Rainy Days has a similar lick of Santana's version of "She's Not There" and for me a really bad guitar solo. It's one of the weakest of the album.

The Witch is one of my favorites and has a nice psych-trance vibe.

Red is a blues song about me raising my kid.

You've Grown is the only song of the album played with my old Les Paul Guitar, I don't know if you can notice but the sound of the Les Paul is stronger than the Washburn. I like how the song destroy itself in the middle and then comes back.

Stoned was written a long time ago but I still like the simple structure of the song.

Numb has very strong and emotional guitar solo and the lyrics are in the same vein of Stoned.

Girlfriend is a cover of the 1991 Matthew Sweet hit. I think I could have done a better job with it but I still like it anyway.

Unfinished Report... is sort of a Krautrock instrumental piece I played one night while trying to record another song, I like it a lot but the drums are sometimes a little out of time.

Here it is as promised, the old version/demo of Wooden Flower, Water And Air.

I hope you appreciate the differences between the old and the new. There's lots of wah guitar in this one and the Mapcap track has a real version of Organ Donor.

I prefer the new version, the noise and hiss of the old version is almost unbearable, that's what I call Lo-Fi, if you're a fan of Guided By Voices you may enjoy it.

Wooden Flower, Water And Air (2007)

I re-recorded the album this past summer the same week I finished recording Debris and Hosted Critical Dynamic Resources, Most of the albums I have recorded this year were done in the summer while I was on vacation, between trips to the beach and home improvement.

This is my favorite album, it has most of what I love in music, although Debris and Destination: Saturn are there competing for the spot.

- Wooden Flower Suite is my best song yet, I just love it, I started writing the Spiral Purple Rose part and then I started adding more parts until I felt it was one whole piece, it was from the beginning my intention to do a suite of short songs related to each other, that I had done with Destination: Saturn as a whole fantasy concept album with all songs related in music and lyrics to each other, but I've never done it within a song. The basic track of the whole song was recorded on one take with acoustic guitar.

- Fuzzy Toys Of Old is one of the weakest songs on the album, not that I don't like it but there are others more powerful.

I composed another suite called Water And Air comprised of Up In the Attic/Home Improvement/Pipe Riders/The Big Hand/Water And Air/Yellow Oily Sticky Thumbs but I recorded all of those separated because I didn't know how to mix them all into one, so now all of those songs stand alone.

- Up In The Attic was an old piece I've been playing since the 90's, originally a Bossa Nova/Jazz piece (I don't know, still sort of Bossa).

- Home Improvement is a protest song.

- Pipe Riders is the weakest track, an instrumental.

- The Big Hand is a blues based strange little song, the intro/outro was lifted from a 1967 song by The Incredible String Band.

- Water And Air was supposed to be the central piece of the suite, is another favorite, I love the solo part not only because of the solo which is really nice but the bass and acoustic guitar give it a good warm sound.

- Yellow Oily Sticky Thumbs is another favorite, an eastern tinged song with strange lyrics which I still don't know what they mean. The solo part has my voice backwards saying: "Trading flowers for company, plotting the newest crime scene just so the hands of time can feel the never ending songs of dreams" which is part of Never Ending Songs Of Dreams from the Wooden Flower Suite.

- Madcap is a song dedicated to Syd Barrett written before he died. It starts with just organs, electric piano, bass, drums and my voice then the guitar creeps in there and does the solo for what seems to be 40 minutes and then the original song returns only to break into free form madness. When I recorded this in 2004 I had the lyrics but didn't know how to sing them so the song ended instrumental. Now at last I sang the damn thing.

- Sunshine (Reprise) is exactly that a reprise of Sunshine from the Wooden Flower Suite but this time with another solo (backwards).

The artwork was stolen from an old 60's concert poster, if the original artist has a problem I'll gladly remove it.

A New Perspective (2007)

This album was recorded in early 2007.

I used a Washburn X-Series strat for the guitar and bass parts and the Propellerhead Reason Software for the drums.

The songs are based on roots reggae. At the time I was listening to a lot of stuff like Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus, Desi's Roots and The Mighty Diamonds; the thing is that I'm no Rasta and I only wish I could play or sing with the soul those guys do, so the songs ended very different from all I've recorded and even more different from standard roots reggae.

Now you will listen to my least favorite album. I guess I don't like it because I respect so much those roots artists and this ended as some sort of insult to them. Well, I tried very hard.

I've always thought (roots reggae) was a difficult music to play because of the rythmic but spacy structure, it's mainly based on the bass. There were lots of artists trying to cash in on the success of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals and the movie The Harder They Come but there were many, many greats that came out around that time.

Songs I like from this album: "Because I Could Not Stop For Death", "Goodbye!", "Fire And Ice" and the guitar solo of "Morning Glories".

Lost In The Morning Dew (2007)

This album was recorded right before "Destination: Saturn".

This is my take on heavy/stoner rock, "Core" is not that heavy though.

The title track starts heavy then gets into an eastern break, after that it disintegrates for a little free form attack and then it comes back to the heavy theme.

It contains a Jethro Tull cover: "A New Day Yesterday" which along with "Black As Night" are what I believe the weakest tracks of the album.

This is one of my least favorite albums because first as you may have notice I'm not a good singer (heavy rock requires a strong voice) and second I'm not much into heavy rock anymore, I still like it but it doesn't move me like when I was a kid.

My favorite tracks from the album are: "Lost In The Morning Dew", "Stop Don't Run", "Disgrace" and "Old And Grey".

Hosted Critical Dynamic Resources (2007)

This one was recorded this past summer the same day I finished recording "Debris".

I needed some kind of release after working on those "Debris" songs and thought I do some experiments with minimal electronic music.

These tracks were done without overdubs, just had to sequence the bass line and then I turned a couple of knobs, that was all and three hours later in between some snacks and a little TV we have this album. The x-rays are mine (you can see my small sinus problem).

A Vision In A Dream (2006)

This album was written mostly in 2006, I say mostly because my songs were written in 2006 but there are five late 19th century and early 20th century poems and two covers.

The poems are:

-The Forsaken Merman by Matthew Arnold

-I Am Not Yours by Sara Teasdale

This album was the first one I recorded with computer amps/effects for guitar although you won't notice any difference except for the extra hiss, well I was still experimenting with the effects and new mic.

I played it with a Les Paul guitar, the bass parts were done with the Les Paul as well, the piano is a cheap Casio Keyboard I wish I could play better and drums were done with the Propellerhead Reason 3.0, this software (Reason) is my friend because I can't play drums where I live, don't have the space and can't afford good electric drums.

Another note: I wrote the music for Requiem at the same time I wrote Destination: Saturn in 1997.

Debris (2007)

This album was written and recorded in 2007.

It is one of my favorite albums although is more pop than what I'm used to record it sounds different from your typical 2000's pop.

It has two covers "Massachusetts" from Bee Gees and "Sanctuary" from The Yankee Dollar a summer of love band.

It contains two instrumentals, the blues based "Watching The LP Go 'Round" and "3rd Street (Love Song)" a piece named after the street my wife and I lived when we got married.

"Take Him By The Hand" was written in 2002 and although I don't believe in any religion it has religious lyrics, well I don't don't know what I was thinking.

"Red Carpets" is about the paparazzi-hungry state of our world.

The last song "One Of Us (For Peter)" is one of two songs I wrote for my school friend Peter Mercado who committed suicide 18 years ago.

Alejandro Jodorowsky's Masterpieces

This past summer I bought "The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky" Box Set and man what a treat it is!
I greatly recommend this package to every avant-garde fan.

It contains his first three commercial films:
- Fando y Lis
- El Topo
- The Holy Mountain
It also contains:
- La Cravate his first (short) film.
- La Constelación a documentary

A couple of years ago I downloaded the first three commercial films and was shocked by his audacity and imagination, the thing is that these files were converted from old vhs tapes and to see this new DVD version I have to say you must buy this package.

Although Fando y Liz is almost impenetrable, the film is beautiful and strange in a Free Jazz sense (remember I'm a music fan), the acting is really good also.

El Topo as most of you know is a cult classic which got famous by John Lennon's appraisal and by being the first cult midnight movie of the 70's.

The film is rich, violent, strange and revolutionary, even today you show it to a friend and I'm sure he/she will be shocked.

Jodorowsky plays El Topo and his son Brontis plays El Topo's son on the film.

At the time the film was picked up for distribution the critics were divided over whether the film was a masterpiece or an incoherent bloodbath.

On the other hand the critics bashed The Holy Mountain, most of them hated it and for me it was his greatest achievement. This film has all his trademark skills and more it is so trippy you won't even care about the plot which in turn was his most coherent to date. The surrealistic imagery in this film is so over the top I don't even know how to describe it.

Destination: Saturn (2007)

This was the third album I wrote.

The original "demo" as I now call it was recorded in 1997 with a Les Paul guitar and a karaoke tape recorder and it really sounds crappy with a lot of fuzz and energy. The drums were sampled with a delay/sampler pedal. I will post that original recording on another time.

On this new version I can say I'm very proud of the sound.

I used the following instruments:
